Great early recording of Lou and the Velvet Underground. ...,Although I share the sentiment of the band. ...,I could do without Nico. ...,She kept Andy [warhol] bemused but that's about it.

It's been said many times before, but I'll say it again in light of Lou Reed's recent passing: this is one of the most important records ever made. I'll venture to say it's more influential than "Sgt. Pepper's," which came out the same year and feels fussy, goofy and old fashioned in comparison. This is ground zero for virtually every kind of underground/alternative/punk/indie music that followed. Any band that wears black, sings about dark subjects and has an arty angle owes something to this record. Absolutely indispensable.

I found it very interesting hearing the alternate versions.

The Velvet Underground seem to exist more as an ideal to be responded to than a musical group sometimes. At least to me it's that way. A classic bit of stuff from the likes of Lou Reed and John Cale, but what hit me when listening to some of the sounds was a degree of attitude adoption that I had not been conversant with beforehand. But then the Velvet Underground is an almost religious touchstone for some. Like a bit of finger or a patch of skin venerated. Never were they the entire package?
